CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) & CAD (Computer-Aided Design)

Swissturn uses a variety of software programs to streamline the production process. We use Solidworks for solid modeling and CAD (Computer-Aided Design). Having a solid model available helps us to understand a customer’s requirements and to visualize potential risks during the manufacturing process. We often redraw a customer’s print to make it more manufacturing friendly, to adjust tolerances to allow for post-machining procedures (heat treatment, plating), and to specifications not detailed by the customer, such as thread dimensions.

Solidworks allows us to read a wide range of CAM file types, including .sldprt, .sldasm, .slddrw, .3mf, .ai, .psd, .dwg, .dxf, .ipt, .iam, .prt, and many others. If you have any questions about the file types we work with, don’t hesitate to contact our engineering department.

Once ready to write the CNC program for a new part, we import the CAD file (typically a .SLDPRT file) into Partmaker, our CAM software. Partmaker automates the writing of the code required by our CNC Swiss screw machines. It will convert the CAM file into CNC code that our machines can read.

After the program is generated and the code is edited as may be necessary (using CIMCIO-EDIT software) by our engineers, they send it directly to our DNC (Direct Numerical Control) system, specifically a system called CIMCO DNC-MAX. This DNC system allows the operators on the shop floor to pull the program directly into the CNC machines. DNC-Max gives us complete control over program transfers from one central application. When CNC programs are uploaded from a machine in our manufacturing center to the DNC server, it is saved as a separate program version to avoid unauthorized process changes.

Our CNC Swiss screw machines are connected to our DNC server through a wireless network for efficiency and speed throughout the shop.
